- About the year 1922 a very sad disaster took place on the Shannon at Tarman Barry Co Longford.
It was on a Summer's evening and a party of five found a boat on the bank and they decided they would take French leave with it. So they got into it and went of. Before they started they were warned not to go too near the sluices. They were going along quite gaily but, they were not cautious and before they could stop it the boat was over the dreaded waterfall. As the sluice gates were up fully, the current sucked the boat clean under them to a drop of 12 or 14 feet.
There were many witnesses of the disaster but unfortunately they were too far away to save more than one life. There were three ladies and one gentleman drowned. The Shannon had to be dragged for a week before the bodies were(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
