  1. There is a fort about half a mile from where I live. It is called Payne's fort. Long ago there were fairies in it. Not far from the fort there lived in a small house, an old man, and an old woman. They were very poor, they had only one cow. At last the cow got sick, and died, and then they had nothing at all.
A neighbour gave them fifteen pounds to buy a cow, and they bought a cow. After twelve months the cow had a calf, then they had a cow, and a calf. One Sunday the poor man, and his neighbour were going to Mass they went through the fort, as they were going through the fort they saw a cow. The poor man said to the other man isn't that my cow that died, the other man said it was. Then they heard a voice in the adjoining bushes, saying that it is indeed your cow, you can take her home with you I have finished with her. It was a fairy that was in the bushes. The poor man brought home the cow, and then he had two cows, and a calf. It was my grandfather who told me the story, he is eighty two years of age.
