  1. Treasure is often said to be found in Ireland but there was never much found around Athlone.
    In the town there is a field usually known as Macken's field and under a tree in that field treasure was supposed to be hidden. It was hidden by Paul Ally who after stealing it from a bank in England got ashamed of himself. He then hanged himself, and at night his ghost is supposed to be seen hanging from the tree.
    Attempts were made by Mr Macken to find it but with no result. The treasure cosisted of money but it was never found.
