I heard of one man who went to him to get a pair of boots made, and when the shoe-maker took his measure he said, "I have not enough leather here, but I will sew a piece of calico to the top of the boots.
The shoe-maker had a stool, and half of the stool was in the shape of a box, and the other part was for sitting on. he used to keep his tools in the box. These were his tools, pincers, hammer, last, awl, hemp, wax and a sharp knife. He made his own hemp out of flax.
