It was used as a drink,
Boxty Bread, was made locally and I heard an old rhyme about it when I was young.
"The Rathmore girls, their eyes are red
Blowing the fire to the boxty bread."
It had ceased to be used before my memory.
Oat Bread. Oaten bread was commonly made up to about fifty years ago, and I believe I am the only person in this locality who occasionally bakes an oaten cake. The meal for oaten bread was ground very fine. A few handfuls were put in a basin, a pinch of salt added and that made into a dough with warm water. It was flattened into a cake, cut in quarters or eighths, and was then baked on a griddle or sometimes by placing it before the fire on the hearth.
