  1. Long ago the fairs used be held in the fair-greens. They were not held in the towns because they were forbidden to do so by the town's people.
    Long ago the buyers used not go from house to house buying stock but they do so at present.
    In every village and town in Clare there is a fair green but in those late years the fairs are not held in them.
    When a person sells a beast he has to pay tolls or custom as it is called to the owner of the fair-green. Six pence is generally paid out of beasts from a year and
