- Folklore The word "Ennis" or Inis means an island. The part of the town which the Abbey is in was at one time an island.
Long ago the river Fergus sent a stream out of Parsons Quay across Parnell Street, the market, and O'Connell Street and continued through the grounds now owned by the convent of mercy, and then Joined the main river near Babby's bridge at the back of the causway. Then the Abbey was known as "Manistear Inis bluan Ramfada," or, "The Island Monastery of-(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
