- In olden times people used only three meals a day, these were breakfast dinner and supper. A couple of hours work was done each morning before breakfast, especially by farmers, who always milked the cows, fed calves and pigs before breakfast. Dinner was the principal meal and was eaten about 1 oclock. Supper was taken when the work in the fields was finished at about seven oclock.
The breakfast in olden times consisted of porridge and skim milk. Stirabout was used by the poorer people. Porridge was made from oat-meal and new-milk, while stirabout was made from oat-meal, water and salt.
The dinner consisted of potatoes and salted new milk. Those who could afford it used a little butter with the potatoes. Meat was used(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
