    Shops were not as common formely as they are now. People had to go long distances, often fourteen miles and more, to make their purchases at the nearest town. The journey was one that was looked forward to with great satisfaction, and was considered as great a feat as a journey of one hundred miles at present.
    Before the establishment of creameries, butter was made in the homes and packed in firkins. The buetter buyers attended at the various towns on buttermarket days and the people came long distances to sell their butter. They then purchased their commodities that would suffice till the next buttermarket or cattle fair.
