Then the man went in and told the devil who was at the gate and the devil said not to let him in for he would only cause a disturbance. So the man went out and told the smith that the devil would not let him in. And the smith said that he had no place to go that he should go in. Then the devil told the man to put a lantern in his hand and send him back to Ireland as Jackie the Lantern. Then the devil said that he was not fit for hell or heaven and that is how Jackie the Lantern got his name.
