   the thatcher puts a couple of rows of scallops in a fancy pattern on the top to secure back and front together so that the wind cannot raise the thatch. He also places a row of scallops flat near the lower edge of the roof and cuts the straw off with a shears to make the eave look nice. Oaten straw is generally used and looks very pretty when newly put up. Rye straw is sometimes used.

2. Hedge-Schools

   My Grandfather who lived on the Birr Road near Roscrea used to go to a hedge-school. The name of the teacher that taught him was Mr. Lambe.
   Mr. Lambe used to go to a different shed in the district each day to teach the pupils. The pupils used to bring a sod of turf each day.
   The subjects taught were Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Irish was not taught. They had slates to write on.
