  2. My Grandfather who lived on the Birr Road near Roscrea used to go to a hedge-school. The name of the teacher that taught him was Mr. Lambe.
    Mr. Lambe used to go to a different shed in the district each day to teach the pupils. The pupils used to bring a sod of turf each day.
    The subjects taught were Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Irish was not taught. They had slates to write on.
