    The chimneys were made of clay and stones.
    In Clare the old houses had no chimneys and the smoke used to go out the windows and the doors.
    Half-doors were common in the district and some of them are to be seen yet.
    Turf and wood were used in the fires.
    Dips and rush-lights were used for giving light at night. Candles were made locally from tallow.
    There were no matches known in this part of the country in olden times and the method they had for making lights was to dip brown paper into nitre-water and let it dry.
