   Long ago in Ireland the potato was the principal food of the people and when the potato failed in the year eighteen forty seven about half the population of Ireland died with the hunger.

   In this district the people usually lay one or two acres of ground aside each year to sow the potato crop.

   The best potato grown around here is said to have been the "Kerry Champion" or "Kers Pinks".

   These two varieties of potatoes are two very early crops which are sown about the first of march.

   First of all before the potatoes are sown the ground is harrowed twice and then rolled. After that the ground is left to soften.

   Then when all that is done it is ploughed with a wheel plough and then it is harrowed again.

   Then at last of all the drills are opened with a swing plough. Then the manure is drawn out in a horse and car and it is left in piles on the drills.
