    July the stalks are sprayed. This is how it is done eight pounds of blue-stone and ten pounds of washing soda to forty gallons of water. This is then filled into a spraying machine and strapped to a man's back. He then goes along the furrow holding the nozzle of the machine over the stalks. When Autumn comes the potatoes are dug with a spade and put in a pit. This is made in the following manner. First the farmer levels the ground where the pit is to be about two feet in width. Then the potatoes are thrown on a heap and covered with rushes which were put standing against the potatoes. Scraws were put on top of the rushes, to keep them firm.
