bag was spread on the floor and the boiled potatoes placed on it. The household sat round the bag and consumed the potatoes. No forks or knives were used, but the fingers were brought into use. sometimes what is known locally as a sciar (or wickerwork skiff) was used instead of a bag. The potatoes were put into this, and then it was placed on top of a pot, in the middle of the kitchen floor. Tea was unheard of ninety years ago.
Before the famine the population of Ireland was almost double what it is now, because they depended chiefly on potatoes for food. When the blight came and the potato crop failed, great numbers of people died of starvation. After the famine tea was brought into the country and bread became more common as a food.
