The name Smithwick belongs to a large family in Dungourney, the head of the family named John Smithwick, being at one time the strongest man in the district

In Guth na mBard, Tadhg O Donnchadha explains Smisteach as a person mor, reamhar, laidir.

It is interesting to note that Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, written about 1589-90, has the following on the title-page of Second Quarto edition:

    (Love's Labour's Lost)
"a wittie and pleasant comedie. As it was acted by his Majestys Servants at the Black-Friars and the Globe. Written by William Shakespeare, London. Printed by W.S. for JOHN SMETHWICKE and are to be sold at his shop in Saint Dunstones Church-yard under the Diall. 1631."
