It was a custom long ago to light bonfires on St. John's night.

It was a custom long ago to light bonfires on St. John's night. All the boys and girls of the district would be gathering material for the bonfire a week before hand. The fire was made of furze and limbs of trees piled up on one another until they were about ten feet high.
When St. John's night came the fire was lit and held blazing for four or five hours. Whilst the fire was burning the boys and girls were dancing on a stage nearby, and all the old people looking on. The children caught hands and ran round the fire. The people did not leave until the fire was dying out.
