The houses of the labourers seldom had more than two rooms - a bedroom and kitchen and if the family was large a bed should be made up in the kitchen also.
The thatch used by the farmers who could grow wheat, was reed which was made by striking the heads of the wheat against a barrel to separate the wheat from the straw so as not to break or batter the straw which was bound into sheaves again and kept till the thatcher arrived.
Oaten straw was also used as thatch, but it was not so suitable as the reed or wheaten straw.
The very poor farmers and labourers used rushes or heather as thatch, and the walls of their houses were generally made of yellow mud. The floors of those houses were almost always made of mud also, but the kitchens of the large farmers' houses were often paved with pebbles from a river bed, and sometimes large flags(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
