  1. The oldest thatcher in the district was the late Timothy Mc Carthy of Knocknanaugh. It was principally his profession. He was thatching for upwards of forty years. The other present day thatchers are Denis O Keeffe Glencollins, Jeremiah Bradley Tureengarrive, James Foly Ballinahulla, Patrick leader Glencollins and John ÓConnor also known as "Tannery" of Mocha.
    A thatcher's implements consist of a rake a knife and a hand leather. The rake is used to clean the thatch of any grass when the "bay" is put up. The knife is used to even the thatch so as to set it even when raked. The hand leather is worn on the palm of the hand. This is for driving in the spar firmily. The knife is usually made out of the back of old scythe as it must
