- I have a churn at home. It is a machine churn. It is two foot high, and one and a half wide on top, and has a square lid on it. My churn is about twenty years old. There is four parts in my churn. First part is the churn itself, the lid, the dash, and the handle. There is a mark on the side of it which is ten gallons.
Butter is made twice a week in summer and once a week in winter. Mother does the churning. Whenever a stranger comes in some people make him or her take the churn. It takes a half an hour to churn in summer and an hour in winter. When churning is finished you would know it to lift off the lid.
Cold water is put into the churn to keep it warm in summer, hot water is put into it in winter. There is a large piece of board with a handle out of it, it is for taking out the butter out of the churn. The milk which is left after churning is used for baking bread.
There are proverbs connected with churning, the first one is that if anyone came in while the churning(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
