“There are several forts in the district. Some are longer than others...”
There are several forts in the district. Some are larger than others. Some are thirty and others sixty yards in diameter. They are of the usual type, a ditch surrounded by a trench. Quick fence - whitethorn usually grows on the ditch.
The following are the forts -
- Three at Carrowkeel
- One on John Gates's land Cullicuirvan[?]
- One on Joseph Kelly's land Coolegarry
- William Clogher's Gardenfort
- Mick Egans - Fiscarn. There is what is known as a Lisheen, a small lios, on Pat Daly's land at Curualea. It was, and is used as a burying place for unbaptized and still-born children. It is situated on a small hill beside the Bulleenirvan lake. Stones, simple lumps of stones mark the graves.
