  1. Our local landlord was Mr. Roe. He was about fifty years in this district. The districts over which he ruled were the three Kilcashels, Upper, Lower and Middle, Cranberry and Liberty.
He was a cruel landlord, and he evicted many of the people.
He did not bring in foreigners but an emergency man or caretaker to look after the place, until the owner paid the rent or rates. One of the caretakers was named Copley.
The lands was not divided into farms, and it was not divided among the tenants. The landlord had power over the tenants. They had not to pay tithes.
The rent and rates were gathered by an agent named Crozier. He had an office in Ballinasloe. Some paid the rent and rates in money and the poor people paid it in kind. It was collected for the landlord who lived in England.
