    district and every morning three or four people were found dead; then they were taken to the Abbey where a big hole was dug for them and then they were put into it. Those holes are to be seen to day and they are called the Famine Pits.

    During the famine the people almost died of hunger and want. The famine existed in the year 1846 and 1847. It was worse around Skibbereen than in any other part of the Co, Cork. The people who had any land were forced to give it to the landlord in payment for the rent.
