In the houses long ago especially in the thatched ones were to be seen crosses made of straw also plaits made of straw stuck up in the roof of the house. To day they are to be seen in some of the country houses. In our house they can be seen in the roof about twenty of them. Now the origin of these crosses was that at one time when Saint Bridget was living in Ireland a great plague broke out amongst the people and crowds had died. Then Saint Bridget took two wisps in her hand and put one across the other forming a cross. She held this up in her hand and all the people at once got two bits of sticks and made a cross and put it up in their houses.
