    they found that they were all rotted away. Many of the people fled from their homes in despair and went to America. The ruins of their old houses are still to be seen in this district but they can hardly be identified.
    A number of old roads around here were made as relief jobs for the people. The people worked for two-pence a day on these jobs. When the famine was over in the district more than three quarters of the population were dead or had emigrated to America.
