- There were many customs associated with the marriages in this district in former years. Long ago it was a custom for a couple to get married on Candlemas day because it was always a great fair-day in Ballaghadereen and several young couples used meet there and get married.
Long ago in this district it was a custom to shake salt on any girl who did not get married on Candlemas day as they believed it kept them fresh for the following years. There were no cars in this
