    In the olden days it is said mermaids were seen occasionally. The old people of this district tell a story about a mermaid that was seen in a lake in the neigh-bourhood known as Lough Allen.
    This lake teems with valuable fish and so two fishermen came came to it to earn a living. They lived in an old residence at Spencer Harbour in County Leitrim.
    One early morning when they were out fishing they were fright-ened to see a mermaid sitting on the waters. She had the shoulders, hands, and head of a girl and the tail of a fish. On seeing the men she disappeared in the waters and arose again about a quarter of a mile away.
    The following morning they saw her again. It is said that any per-son who sees a mermaid three mornings in succession will be drowned. Fearing lest they should
