Local Marriage CustomsMarriages take place most frequently in this district from Christmas until Shrove Tuesday.
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. That day people make pancakes and there is feasting in every house. Some people eat meat on this day and they never eat any meat during Lent after that.
Matches are made for mosted marriages. A few men go to a house where there is a young girl, and they ask her to marry a certain boy. They bring a bottle of whiskey with them, and if the girl and her parents consents to the marriage, the bottle is opened and they all drink it. A few nights after the same men go to the girls house and they bring the groom with them. Then there is great welcome given to the groom.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
