A Local Happening
In the olden ays it was customary for people for miles around Drumshanbo to attend the big market that is held there on the Friday before Easter Sunday. So it happened that fifteen persons from a neighbouring district known as Curry came to it.
As the modes of conveyance were scarce in those days they had to travel in a boat through Lough Allen.
When they were returning home it is said some of them were drunk especially the men folk of the crew. There were eight men and seven women in the boat. When they were just half way on their return journey the wind arose and tossed the frail little boat through the wild waves. The women got excited and from the ill luck that was in store for them they were all drowned.
It was a very sad affair as all that were drowned were married(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
