- (continued from previous page)sods, after a few days of fine weather, are easily broken with the harrow, and this field is harrowed again. At this stage, the scutch grass is gathered into a heap at one corner (top or bottom) of the field, and burned.
The ground is now ready for "opening the drills", and for this purpose a special plough called the "double-plough" is used. The plough has two "mould brands" one each side-and, this means that the drills can be opened twice as quick as the ordinary " [?] plough" is used.
Farmyard manure is spread in the allies (between the drills), before the seed potatoes are "dropped", and just before the drills are "closed", a slight sprinkling of artificial manure is applied.
The day on which the actual sowing or "putting in" of the potatoes takes place is always a very busy one. At least(continues on next page)
