Grandmother told me that her parents kept a shop and many a time the mothers came for a couple of pounds of meal to make porridge for a whole family. They made it very thin and it would not sustain. She said that many of those who bought the small quantities of meal were to be seen dead by the roadside next day with blades of grass in their mouths. The government also helped to relief the distress by giving work to the people and feeding them. Churches, bridges and lands were drained and these were know as the "public works."
