    A long time ago a poor man and woman lived together. They had not anything but an old cow and a garden of cabbage. The man decided they should kill the cow and that they should have a but of her oppposite every head of cabbage. They killed the cow and the woman took her out to the garden and left a slice of her on every head of cabbage. They went to bed very contented that night. In the middle of the night the man was awakened by a terrible noise. He got up, wakened his wife, and asked her what was the matter. She answered, "the dogs of the country are eating the beef". "What beef" asked the man. The woman answered, "the beef you told me to leave in the garden." Naturally he was very angry with her and told her that they should have to beg for a living.
