When we began firing Ben Jones he did say,
"You'll meet farmers and grazers from Louth & from Meath.
Be expert my brave lads and lay them all down,
For it's in their pockets you'll find many a pound"
"We'll ransack the town, till the night come on,
Then take through the country and travel along,
The best of their property we'll make it our own.
We'll cause widows to mourn and orphans to moan.
"Its early next morning a petition we'll draw.
And send it to the Government to free us from the law.
To make them out rebels coming into the town
To break King Gerry's laws and dishonour the crown"
But brave Mr Caffery he's just, brave, and right,
May the angels guard him by day & by night
He rode to Bailieboro in time of great need,
And brought horsemen and footmen to Shercock with speed.
Those infernal corps they were all dyed in blood.
As the army came round them they were stripping the dead,
But brave Mr Caffery put them all to flight
And their evil intentions were fruitless that night
The burning of Ballina I remember it well
