Unto my great astonishment it's then and there I found
A tenant farmer's residence all raised unto the ground
I heard its inmates were sent to some place to me unknown Like all that were evicted from the mountain of Greaghlone.
Sad thoughts and recollections with grief to fill
The mountain side i recollect the farmers once to till
The very spot on which i stood the farmers once did own but the landlord now possesses all the Mountain of Greaghlone
I stood a while to ponder on the grief I could not hide
From thoughts of friends so dear to me now scattered far and wide
In Australia and America they seek another home
And I'm in doleful reverie on the mountain of Greaghlone
With saddened heart I then sat down beneath a spreading tree The woes of Erin's hapless land flashed o'er my memory Enough to break a patriots heart were it as hard as stone Since Tyrant laws left ruined walls on the mountain of Greaghlone.
Right towards the west I cast a look and saw the setting sun
I would that dark oppression was from us forever gone
And if the rays of freedoms light had once upon us shone
We'd be light-hearted as the hares that play upon Greaghlone
I then abruptly rose to go and end this doleful day
And hope the days of freedom's dawn are now not far away
