    eastern side of one of these bushes where it was left untouched and allowed to rot. It was piously believed that the departed was allowed to pass his purgatory here. This view is not in conflict with Holy Faith or with the teaching of the Church as Purgatory is defined as a state of punishment in the next life. This view is rather tenaciously held in many parts of the country among the members of the older generation. I myself saw the practice in operation, and am thus confirmed in the view that these "lonely" bushes should still be respected.
