Mrs Quilter agreed and sent for the porter to Lixnaw. John was left up that night to put an end to the cockroaches. Next morning Mrs Quilter asked John if he had succeeded in killing them and John assured her that she would not be troubled any more by those things, as they had been killed when they tasted the porter.
That night John and Mrs Quilter were sitting near the fire and again the cockroaches began to appear. Soon large numbers of them were creeping around the kitchen floor.
"Oh! John," said Mrs Quilter "I thought you told me that you had all these ugly things destroyed". "Ah! my good woman", said John, "they are the temperate ones!"- Bailitheoir
