- Potatoes are grown on our farm. There is about one acre and a half under potatoes each year. The amount seldom varies, because we have the same amount of farm yard manure each year.
My father and my brother prepares the ground. Lea ground is manured before being turned up but stubble ground is not manured before being turned up Potatoes are sown in ridges. When the ground is lea the first thing my father does is to mark it into ridges. He marks it into ridges with a plough and some times with a loy. Then he carts out farmyard manure and spreads it between the ridges. Then he turns sods in on top of the manure with a loy, and sometimes with a plough, this is called coping.
