Evictions before the Famine Drumlegere contd from page 108.
The townland belonged to the Blackrock estate or Lindsey.
Lindsey it seems gave it over to OBeirne of Jamestown.
OBeirne evicted nine families for non payment of rent. OBeirne the landlord used to go the road by Drumlegere at certain times. He had a wish for progressive farmers and was willing to help any farmer that paid the rent regularly. John McRann was the only one left in Drumlegere, and his farm was small.
The day before OBeirne was due to come the road he gathered all the cattle he could from his friend and put them on his own land. OBeirne came next day and McRann dropped by to pay the rent. He told the landlord of all the cattle he had and showed them to him and that he had no land to feed them. OBeirne gave him the whole townland and that's how the McRanns got Drumlegere.
