- Travelling Folk
Some travellers who used to call long ago still call to our house. Some of them are not so poor. Some of them have camps and they camp out during the Summer but in Winter they return to their homes. Some travellers have houses in Balinasloe.The best known travellers in this locality are, Carthys, Stephens, Doyles and Kellys. The Carthy family consists of two brothers. When they come to this village they always camp in the same place. Every night the young men that live in the locality gather round them listening to them telling stories about their travels in other places. They sell delph and mats. Often they take horse-hair or feathers as part payment of delph or mats. The Doyle family consists of two brothers also. They make little tables and sell them. The Stephens travel round in a van. They sell delph. Tinkers travel in bands and the best known are the Wards, Donohoes, and Donovans. They sell small articles such as, boot-laces, small mirrors, badges and saucepans.
