- The first hedge school in the district was in Claggan, beside my own home. It was a grand-uncle of my father whose name was George Davenpost, who taught in it. It was the only one within miles, and all the children from Culdaff and Glengad came to be taught there. The remains of the school were scattered, by my father, who used the stones to build a wall around a park. The children used to sit around on bunches of rushes instead of seats, and they wrote with quills.
