  1. One time long ago there was a very hard frost and Gartan Lough was frozen over. The boys of the locality were playing foot ball on it. One of them, a non-Catholic, said that Colmcille had to have stepping stones to cross the lake but that he could go across without them. Just then the ice broke under him and his head was severed from his body. the head went hopping along the ice and the body disappeared behind the ice which closed over it again. The people present said they heard the head saying hell, hell, hell.
    This happened to a boy named Forrest whose relations still live near the lake.
