In the year 1798 a French frigate visited the shores of Donegal bay and anchored in a place called the “rock of Dooran. The intention of the crew was to invade the country but they were being followed by English vessels and they had to flee. The anchor was connected to the boat by a strong rope. In their hurry to get away the rope was cut and the anchor fell to the bottom of the ocean. Here it was found some years later by the relatives of J. Crawford and it was brought to Donegal harbour by them. Here it lies still and local fishermen tie their boats to it. The fluke can be seen at low tide but the rest is sunk in the ground.
