   We came to the conclusion that Patrick was swifter than Dominick. Patrick worked in Scotland to the one side of a canal. This canal contained a swing bridge. Very often the bridge was swung off before Patrick got that far. But with one jump Patrick leaped the canal. Many an evening he was compelled to cut that leap owing to the swing bridge. The champion runner of Scotland heard of Patrick. His name was Deerfoot who challenged Patrick for a long race. Patrick did not like the course and sent a challenge back to Dearfoot that he would run him Glasgow to Lough Katrine (about 30) miles in the bare-feet. Deerfoot accepted the challenge, all included nearcuts. They started from the city of Glasgow and went on direct. They seemed to be tight matches. They went on and on till they came to a five acre field. There Dearfoot started to roar the stubbles were making murder on his barefeet. My brave Patrick ran on and on and never found any trace Dearfoot till he reached Lough Katrine. There he got he got three cheers for our brave Irish Paddy. He washed his feet in a stream and came home to his lodge in high spirits. I now must
