  1. There were hedge-schools held in Araglen until seventy years ago. they were he;d in farmers' houses for a small term in every house. The teachers name was Barry the Rake.
    All Irish he used to speak and he taught it to the children also. He used to be supported by the farmers around and the children used to pay a penny a week. They had no books but blackboards and chalks. The blackboard was placed on an easel and the children standing around it. He used to remain a week in every house.
    About seventy five years ago Ballyheaffy N.S. was built. It was built for a chapel first and then they made a school of it.
