  1. Long ago men or women never wore shoes till they were getting married. That was when they were about twenty. Johny Fair, Carrowkilleen, never wore a pair of shoes, he was about eighty years when he died. The most famous shoe-maker was John Brien, Gortnahurra. He made shoes for all the people in the village. The shoe-makers were not very plentiful in Crossmolina.
    If the eldest child got a pair of shoes, they would last for years and they would pass down to each member of the family. The shoes lasted for years because they were worn only very rarely. If a man came to tow to buy some goods during the week, he tied his shoes together with little sugán and put them round his neck or over his shoulders till he came to the outskirts of the town.
