    "shake-downs". They people also gave them breakfast.
    After the failure of potatoes in '46 and '47 a good many people had to leave the country. There were a great many people starving and dying of hunger. The people then helped the starving people very much. The English people erected Work Houses to aid the people. They did not like them; and some of them preferred to die rather than enter the Work Houses.
    The people gave the beggars many alms such as flour, milk and eggs. They sometimes sold the eggs. They said prayers for the people who helped them.
