- In olden times the people were usually accustomed to two meals only, one in the morning and one at night. Every morning they were compelled to labour vigorously two hours before their breakfast, which was a miserable one. It consisted of porridge and potatoes, and butter-milk which was drunk at each meal.Large quantities of milk, butter and cheese was consumed by all classes.
