  1. Foods of long ago.
The food the people used long ago was oaten meal bread. They would sow the oats in Spring and reap it in Autumn. Then they would thrash it and winnow it. After that it was brought to a mill were it was ground into oaten meal. The oats would be brought at night to the mill, which was in Gorlough. The reason it was brought at night was that it had to be dried, and the man who owned the oats had to mind it. The mill was work by water, it is to be seen there yet. The shells would have to be taken off the oats before it could be ground. Then it would be ground and a card would be sent to the owner when ready. He would go for it and bring it home. He would pay 1/- a cwt. for it.
Then the cake was made and a cross was put on it so that it would bake well. They left a "greidill" on the hearth and put a few coals in it. When the cake was in the oven a lid was put over it. It was then left there to bake.
