- Long ago the houses were very small and they were thatched. The thatched consisted of wattles, scraws, rushes, heather, and sedge out of swamps. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen. This bed was known as a Hag. The fire place was in the centre of the house. The chimney was made of clay and yellow daub. The old people remember houses having no chimney.
