- The houses long ago were not like the houses now. They were made of mud and wattles and turf. They were very small and hand only one window and one door. They made a hole in the roof of the cabin and put a bucket for a chimney to let out the smoke. There was a hole in the wall for a window.
The floors were made of clay. Boarded floors were not in any of the houses. If the floors got sloppy rushes were spread as a mat and sand was sprinkled on the floors. The beds were poor. They were usually bags of rushes, straw or hay, spread on the floor. Later on they made banks and used chaff as beds. Chaff is used to this day. The thatch was put on by the man himself. He fastened it on to scraws with pegs called scallops.- Faisnéiseoir
